Celebrating Bread Days and Thanksgiving for the Fruits of the Earth with the "From Grain to Loaf" Workshop
This October, in celebration of Bread Days and Thanksgiving for the Fruits of the Earth, the scent of small loaves and baked goods fills the air, coming from the bread oven at the "Staro selo" (Old Village) Museum in Kumrovec.
In the museum’s educational workshop, "From Grain to Loaf"—set within the authentic atmosphere of a traditional 19th-century Zagorje house—children learn about various types of grain. They manually shell corn cobs and then discover the hand-operated mill—a *žrvanj* (quern)—which they use to grind the kernels into corn flour.
Using the flour they have produced, the children knead dough and shape it into small loaves and rolls, which are then baked in the bread oven.
For thirty years now, we have been introducing the youngest generations to traditional methods of preparing and baking bread, while preserving the knowledge and customs associated with this vital part of our heritage.
