Let's Paint with Wine
Winemaking and viticulture are one of the important branches of the traditional economy of the Croatian Zagorje. Even in the Stone Age, man was engaged in winemaking, and knowledge was transmitted and spread to many cultures. Wine was used for various purposes: as mass wine in church ceremonies, in the Middle Ages it was used to pay taxes, and many cultures used wine as medicine. Artists often depicted wine and viticulture motifs in their works, and wine also becomes a medium for painting.
"Staro selo" Museum in Kumrovec today preserves and presents the importance of viticulture through its exhibitions, and in the "Let's Paint with Wine" workshop, participants discover which varieties were popular in the Sutla region, where they came from and what names they have. Participants also get to know a certain variety of wine through a different medium, which is wine painting or vinorel. The works created in the workshop are taken home by the participants because the paintings are not yet finished. Just as the wine matures, the vinorel needs time to mature and show the final tones that the wine has left behind.
